Arriving with the tower closed — Converging traffic
Use CTAF with the tower and east runway closed.
Your scenario
You are flying Evektor, registration N827EV. Your position is 10 miles east of Paine Field, indicated altitude 2500 feet. You are tuned to Paine traffic.
Practice goals
- Use CTAF with the tower and east runway closed.
- Coordinate with observed traffic without requesting a clearance.
Respond aloud during each ten-second practice window, then compare with the example. Replay any exchange you want to practice.

- 0:00 NARRATOR: Chapter 19. Here is the scenario: Tower and the east runway are closed at
- 0:04 Paine Field. Practice arriving on the west runway and making position calls to other
- 0:09 pilots.
- 0:11 NARRATOR: Your starting details: You are flying Evektor, registration N827EV. Your
- 0:16 position is 10 miles east of Paine Field, indicated altitude 2500 feet. You are tuned
- 0:23 to Paine traffic.
- 0:27 NARRATOR: Play the pilot. At each prompt, use the ten-second pause to respond aloud or
- 0:32 decide whether to transmit. Then compare with the example. This is simulated radio
- 0:37 practice.
- 0:40 NARRATOR: Scenario update: You are ten miles east, in simulated VMC. Monitor CTAF 132.95.
- 0:45 The wind and aircraft performance in this case support the selected west runway. Use
- 0:51 the small-aircraft east-side pattern; no Tower or Ground is operating.
- 0:57 NARRATOR: Your task: Announce your inbound position and runway intention on CTAF.
- 1:12 PILOT: Paine traffic, Evektor 827EV, ten miles east, inbound for runway 16R, Paine
- 1:21 NARRATOR: Scenario update: Another aircraft is departing the reciprocal end of the west
- 1:24 runway. Its path may conflict with yours; remain outside the pattern while assessing
- 1:28 the traffic.
- 1:31 OTHER PILOT: Paine traffic, Piper 927EV, departing runway 34L, Paine
- 1:39 NARRATOR: Your task: Announce that you will remain east for the departing traffic. No
- 1:43 one is issuing an ATC clearance.
- 1:55 PILOT: Paine traffic, Evektor 827EV, remaining east of the airport for departing
- 2:00 traffic, Paine
- 2:03 NARRATOR: Scenario update: Time advances. You observe the same aircraft depart and
- 2:07 move clear of your arrival path. Reassess the runway and traffic before joining.
- 2:14 NARRATOR: Your task: Time advances after you check the pattern and runway. You join the
- 2:20 small-aircraft left downwind at 1600 feet MSL.
- 2:33 PILOT: Paine traffic, Evektor 827EV, left downwind runway 16R, full stop, Paine
- 2:41 NARRATOR: Your task: Time advances to base with the runway and approach remaining
- 2:46 clear.
- 2:56 PILOT: Paine traffic, Evektor 827EV, left base runway 16R, Paine
- 3:04 NARRATOR: Your task: Time advances to final for the selected west runway.
- 3:18 PILOT: Paine traffic, Evektor 827EV, final runway 16R, full stop, Paine
- 3:26 NARRATOR: Scenario update: The simulated landing is complete. This exercise assumes
- 3:30 the named exit is safely reachable at taxi speed; it is not a landing-performance
- 3:35 calculation.
- 3:37 NARRATOR: Your task: You exit at Alpha Four, entirely beyond the runway holding-position
- 3:42 marking.
- 3:52 PILOT: Paine traffic, Evektor 827EV, clear of runway 16R at Alpha Four, Paine
- 4:01 NARRATOR: Chapter debrief: Arrival ends clear of the west runway. Self-announcements
- 4:05 were not clearances, and no closed Tower or Ground was invented.
- 4:11 NARRATOR: If you enjoyed this video like and subscribe
