Recognize a runway conflict, hold clear, and depart only after independent checks.

Text practice is available.

Your scenario

Training simulation only. Arlington, runway one one, right traffic. The fictional wind is one one zero at seven knots. You are SportStar Eight Two Seven Echo Victor, an Evektor SportStar Max. Small-propeller pattern altitude is one thousand two hundred feet MSL. Use self-announcements, and keep flying and looking for traffic ahead of radio work.

Practice goals

Respond aloud during the 10- or 12-second response windows. Pause longer whenever needed. Private decisions have no time limit in text practice. Aircraft control comes before speech.

Read the scenario script Text lesson script

This script supports the text practice exercise. Responses appear after each practice prompt.

  1. Draft for instructor review. Fictional traffic and weather. Practice self-announcements, not controller readbacks. Aircraft controls, checklist verification, and cockpit scoring are disabled. Respond aloud during each silent window. Pause the video for more time. Aircraft control always comes before speech.
  3. You are holding short at the full-length departure end of runway one one. This fictional conflict-recognition exercise includes another airplane using the intersecting runway; it is not a recommendation for simultaneous or mixed-runway operations.
  4. Arlington traffic, November Five Three Six Bravo Kilo, final runway three four, full stop, Arlington.
  5. You see the airplane on final runway three four. Its landing will use the intersection with your runway.
  6. Can you ignore that report because your intended runway is one one?
  7. Pause the video now and decide. This is a private decision, not a radio transmission. Resume when ready.
  8. No. Remain clear. Assess intersecting-runway and departure-path conflicts as well as traffic on the runway you intend to use.
  9. If helpful on the clear frequency, state that you are holding short and have the relevant traffic in sight. This coordination call is optional.
  10. Arlington traffic, SportStar Eight Two Seven Echo Victor, holding short runway one one, traffic on final runway three four in sight, Arlington.
  11. Arlington traffic, November Five Three Six Bravo Kilo, clear of runway three four, Arlington.
  12. You visually verify the airplane is clear. Only after checking the intersection, runway, final approaches, departure path, and any additional traffic does the scenario establish that a safe departure is available. No aircraft has cleared you to take off.
  13. You are now holding short at the full-length departure end of runway one one. The scenario independently establishes that applicable pre-takeoff flow and checklist verification were completed while stopped. Your radio response will not mark those checks complete. You have listened and visually checked the runway, final approach, and other conflicting traffic. In this scenario, the departure path is clear.
  14. Your plan is to remain in the pattern.
  15. Make the departure self-announcement before entering the runway.
  16. Arlington traffic, SportStar Eight Two Seven Echo Victor, departing runway one one, remaining in right traffic, Arlington.
  17. There is no controller response. In the simulation you recheck the runway and approach, enter, and take off when safe. Your transmission itself is not permission or proof that the runway is clear.
  18. The simulation advances only after you are beyond the departure end, within three hundred feet below pattern altitude, the path is clear, and a normal right crosswind turn is appropriate.
  19. Join downwind at pattern altitude, continuing the visual scan and listening watch. The script does not set aircraft speeds, flap settings, bank angles, or exact turn points.
  20. Circuit 1. Your plan for this circuit is full stop.
  21. You are established on right downwind for runway one one. The intended landing is full stop. Make the position call when workload and the frequency permit.
  22. Arlington traffic, SportStar Eight Two Seven Echo Victor, right downwind runway one one, full stop, Arlington.
  23. You are established on right base for runway one one. The intended landing is full stop. Make the position call when workload and the frequency permit.
  24. Arlington traffic, SportStar Eight Two Seven Echo Victor, right base runway one one, full stop, Arlington.
  25. You are established on final for runway one one. The intended landing is full stop. Make the position call when workload and the frequency permit.
  26. Arlington traffic, SportStar Eight Two Seven Echo Victor, final runway one one, full stop, Arlington.
  27. You land and leave the landing runway at a suitable exit. The entire airplane is beyond the applicable runway holding-position markings and is clear of the landing runway. You remain clear of any other runway; no taxi route is implied.
  28. Now announce that you are clear of the landing runway.
  29. Arlington traffic, SportStar Eight Two Seven Echo Victor, clear of runway one one, Arlington.
  30. End of this scenario. A clear-of-runway announcement describes an observed position. It is never a clearance for another aircraft or a substitute for a visual check.
  31. The correct ownship pattern is right traffic for runway one one. A call about runway three four can still be important to your operation. Holding short was the correct response to the unresolved conflict.
  32. End of this draft practice. Review current sources and applicable aircraft documents with a qualified instructor before operational use.
