Your scenario

Training simulation only. Arlington, runway three four, left traffic. The fictional wind is three four zero at four knots. You are SportStar Eight Two Seven Echo Victor, an Evektor SportStar Max. Small-propeller pattern altitude is one thousand two hundred feet MSL. Use self-announcements, and keep flying and looking for traffic ahead of radio work.

Practice goals

Respond aloud during the 10- or 12-second response windows. Pause longer whenever needed. Private decisions have no time limit in text practice. Aircraft control comes before speech.

Read the scenario script Text lesson script

This script supports the text practice exercise. Responses appear after each practice prompt.

  1. Draft for instructor review. Fictional traffic and weather. Practice self-announcements, not controller readbacks. Aircraft controls, checklist verification, and cockpit scoring are disabled. Respond aloud during each silent window. Pause the video for more time. Aircraft control always comes before speech.
  3. The arrival and standard pattern entry have already been safely completed. You are on left downwind at pattern altitude. This exercise does not provide an arrival route or an instruction to cross the airport.
  4. Arlington traffic, November Five Three Six Bravo Kilo, left base runway three four, full stop, Arlington.
  5. You positively identify that airplane on left base ahead of you. The scenario supplies adequate visual spacing. No other aircraft has assigned a sequence to you.
  6. Announce left downwind and your full-stop intention. You may report that the base traffic is in sight because you actually see it.
  7. Arlington traffic, SportStar Eight Two Seven Echo Victor, left downwind runway three four, full stop, base traffic in sight, Arlington.
  8. If the airplane were not positively identified, could you still say traffic in sight or assume you were number two?
  9. Pause the video now and decide. This is a private decision, not a radio transmission. Resume when ready.
  10. No. Keep the traffic picture honest, seek a specific position clarification when useful, and do not turn into an unresolved conflict. Radio reports do not establish separation.
  11. Arlington traffic, November Five Three Six Bravo Kilo, final runway three four, full stop, Arlington.
  12. You continue to observe the airplane ahead. When safe spacing permits, you turn left base. The script does not instruct an extended downwind, a short approach, or a particular spacing distance.
  13. Announce your current base position and intended landing.
  14. Arlington traffic, SportStar Eight Two Seven Echo Victor, left base runway three four, full stop, Arlington.
  15. Arlington traffic, November Five Three Six Bravo Kilo, clear of runway three four, Arlington.
  16. You visually verify that the landing runway is clear and keep scanning for additional traffic, including aircraft that have made no call. You are established on final.
  17. Announce final and full stop.
  18. Arlington traffic, SportStar Eight Two Seven Echo Victor, final runway three four, full stop, Arlington.
  19. You land and leave the landing runway at a suitable exit. The entire airplane is beyond the applicable runway holding-position markings and is clear of the landing runway. You remain clear of any other runway; no taxi route is implied.
  20. Now announce that you are clear of the landing runway.
  21. Arlington traffic, SportStar Eight Two Seven Echo Victor, clear of runway three four, Arlington.
  22. End of this scenario. A clear-of-runway announcement describes an observed position. It is never a clearance for another aircraft or a substitute for a visual check.
  23. The other pilot supplied information, not a landing clearance. Your calls did not create priority, and the other airplane being clear did not prove that all traffic was accounted for.
  24. End of this draft practice. Review current sources and applicable aircraft documents with a qualified instructor before operational use.
