Runway 34: clipped call while holding short
Resolve an incomplete report without guessing a runway, position, or permission to depart.
Text practice is available.
Practice this Arlington lesson
The narrated video is not yet available; listening review is pending. Aircraft actions, checklist verification and cockpit scoring are disabled.
Your scenario
Training simulation only. Arlington, runway three four, left traffic. The fictional wind is three four zero at four knots. You are SportStar Eight Two Seven Echo Victor, an Evektor SportStar Max. Small-propeller pattern altitude is one thousand two hundred feet MSL. Use self-announcements, and keep flying and looking for traffic ahead of radio work.
Practice goals
- Resolve an incomplete report without guessing a runway, position, or permission to depart.
- Practice self-announcements with aircraft control ahead of speech.
- Aircraft actions, checklist verification, and cockpit scoring remain disabled.
Respond aloud during the 10- or 12-second response windows. Pause longer whenever needed. Private decisions have no time limit in text practice. Aircraft control comes before speech.

This script supports the text practice exercise. Responses appear after each practice prompt.
- Draft for instructor review. Fictional traffic and weather. Practice self-announcements, not controller readbacks. Aircraft controls, checklist verification, and cockpit scoring are disabled. Respond aloud during each silent window. Pause the video for more time. Aircraft control always comes before speech.

Small-propeller pattern altitude is one thousand two hundred feet MSL. Use self-announcements, and keep flying and looking for traffic ahead of radio work.
- You are holding short at the full-length departure end of runway three four. You have not announced or begun a departure. A transmission is partly blocked, and you cannot identify its caller or runway.
- Arlington traffic ... base ... Arlington.
- The frequency is now silent. Is that enough to enter the runway?
- Pause the video now and decide. This is a private decision, not a radio transmission. Resume when ready.
- No. Remain clear of the runway, continue the visual scan and listening watch, and clarify the specific incomplete report. Silence is not evidence of an empty pattern.
- Ask the aircraft whose base call you just heard to repeat its runway and position. State that you are holding short.
- Aircraft calling base at Arlington, SportStar Eight Two Seven Echo Victor, holding short runway three four, say again runway and position, Arlington.
- Arlington traffic, November Five Three Six Bravo Kilo, left base runway three four, full stop, Arlington.
- You now locate the airplane on left base and continue to hold short. Later, you observe it land and leave the runway.
- Arlington traffic, November Five Three Six Bravo Kilo, clear of runway three four, Arlington.
- You visually confirm the airplane is beyond the runway holding-position markings and separately recheck for other traffic and runway conflicts. Does that clear-of-runway report authorize your takeoff?
- Pause the video now and decide. This is a private decision, not a radio transmission. Resume when ready.
- No. The pilot in command still determines whether entry and departure are safe. If any doubt remains, keep holding.
- End with the airplane still holding short. This exercise intentionally ends before departure so that a safe decision is not scored as a failure to keep moving. If the clarification gets no answer, remain clear and resolve the uncertainty; do not substitute a guessed traffic picture.
- End of this draft practice. Review current sources and applicable aircraft documents with a qualified instructor before operational use.
